Essential Oils & My Pregnancy

31 weeks pregnant, July 2018

 

I get asked all the times "What Essential Oils did you use when you were pregnant?" So, here you go, here is my list of what I used when I was pregnant. This is in no way a recommendation or prescription for other pregnant ladies to use, everyone is different but it is an honest guide of what I used. 

 

Nausea

I would use a combination of the below (not at the same time) and apply to my wrists and inhale throughout the day, especially when waves of nausea hit. I used to also apply drops of them to the inside of my scarf or neck of my clothing so that I could smell the oil constantly and that really helped with the feelings of nausea. Neither worked better than others I just chose whatever I felt like at the time.

 

Ginger

Peppermint Oil or Peppermint Roller

Citrus Bliss

Wild Orange

DigestZen Oil or DigestZen Roller

 

 

Vomiting and heartburn.

I would add one drop to a glass of water after vomiting to help releive my tummy. I used to also constantly have a drop or two in my water bottle most days when i suffered from heartburn to ease it. **Make sure the bottle is glass not plastic so the oil doesn't seep into the plastic and leave you only drinking lightly flavoured water!

Peppermint Oil

 

Those pesky 1st trimester headaches

If I had my rollers on hand I rolled over temples and forehead, otherwise I would mix 1 drop of each with a small amount of fractionated coconut oil and apply. Peppermint and Lavender is also amazing when applied to a cool face washer if you can take an uninterrupted lie down!

Pregnancy dry skin

At around 20 weeks the skin on my face started to get lots of dry patches so I started using 1 drop of each of these oils mixed with fractionated coconut oil on my face after I cleansed and before moisturising day and night. The patches went away instantly, it was incredible and my skin looked better than its ever been. I still do this today!

Pre-labour prep

Perineum prep. To do this I would mix Geranium & Lavender with fractionated coconut oil and roll over my perineum 2-3 times daily a few weeks before my due date to help soften the skin to avoid tearing.

Hello Contractions? At 36 weeks I was told it was safe to start rubbing this oil mixed with fractionated coconut oil on my lower abdomen and inside of ankles to naturally start the body's preparation for labour.

The ultimate labour diffuser blend

My labour diffuser blend was amazing! I literally had this going from the minute I felt my first contraction to when Ruby came out, this was around 45 hours of oils goodness - no wonder she stayed so chilled out in the monitors for all those hours!!! I now use this daily as a "Calm Mumma" roller blend, its actually a delicious perfume substitute that wont irritate bubs skin or little nostrils when curled up close next to you.

Labour Massage Oil

I ended up making a whole bottle of this (as I didn't know how long labour would last for - lucky for that!). This was to have my birthing partner (aka my husband) to rub on my belly, back, legs.... hell whatever was aching that I wanted massaged, this is lovely to use!

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Lavender Oil 

 

Night sweats

I would roll over my lower abdomen, back of neck, inside of ankles morning & night.

Clary Calm

 

Breastfeeding aches and pains

I ended up have a lot of the labour massage blend left of coconut oil and lavender so whenever I still get stiff shoulders or a sore neck from all the breastfeeding and gazing down at my beautiful bub I rub this on morning and night to keep those areas relaxed and pain free. Lavender is also really calming for babies so I know it's not going to upset them if I have doused myself in it compared to the oils I would usually use for aching muscles when not breastfeeding.

 

When you haven't slept all night but need to solider on minus the 5th cup of coffee

I still do this each and every morning. I put one drop of each oil in the palm of my hands. Rub both palms together to create some heat, cup the hands together, close my eyes and take 3 big inhales (maybe more depending on how tired you are Mumma!) You'll be surprised how refreshed you'll feel and how much better it feels to get an energy hit minus the caffeine comedown!
